Balaklava: A Great Place to Be.
Primarily acting as a service centre to the town, local and farming communities of approximately 3000 people, Balaklava is situated on the Adelaide Plains, home to the Wakefield Regional Council. The Economic Development Board and Adelaide Plains Marketing group are proactive in looking for opportunities to promote our communities. The Adelaide Plains Festival, Balaklava Agricultural Show and Balaklava Eisteddfod are just a few examples. A primary production area with supporting businesses, Balaklava boasts a wide range of active volunteer and sporting organisations.
Commercial, industrial and shopping facilities include a Foodland supermarket, banks, post office, chemist, newsagent, two hotels, real estate, eateries and a variety of shops including electrical, hardware, hairdressing and clothing. BALCO Australia- an international exporter of value added rural products has a hay processing plant at Bowmans. Other industries in and around Balaklava include
the Gilmac hay processing plant, abattoirs, numerous pig & poultry farms and ABB grain handling.
Local facilities include child care, primary and secondary schools; Balaklava Hospital complete with its own helipad; medical centre with four doctors, including visiting specialist services; St John Ambulance & CFS; with other services visiting regularly- dentist, chiropractor, physiotherapist and optometrist. Balaklava hosts a diverse range of aged care facilities, including a Nursing Home, Residential Care and independent living units. The Balaklava community is also home to 12 Christian Churches.
The local newspaper the Plains Producer is available each Wednesday. Clubs and organisations include the Lions Club, Red Cross, RSL, Community Arts Organisation, gardening, photography, Museum Complex, Scouts and the Balaklava Court House Gallery with art and craft displays changing regularly.
Sporting clubs and facilities offer a wide range of opportunities to be active and get involved with the community- golf, horse racing, gliding, football, netball, basketball, tennis, hockey, table tennis, lawn bowls, croquet, swimming pool, callisthenics, and pony clubs.
Tourists are able to find accommodation at the hotels, Balaklava Bed and Breakfast, caravan park or its on-site cabins. The Centenary of Federation Gateway sculpture by Marie Jonsson-Harrison makes a stunning entrance to the town and involved hundreds of members of the community in its creation, including students from BPS. Balaklava is close enough to Adelaide for commuters, being an hour from Gepps Cross. It is also 50 minutes from the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley & the Yorke Peninsula. A bus service to Adelaide operates daily.
Housing developments are rapidly emerging and offer a range of houses both for sale and rent.
